The Basics of Enhanced Barrier Precautions – April 14, 2025

Members and Non-members: Free
Continuing Education: 1 CE hour
Recording Date: April 14, 2025
Duration: 60 minutes
Speakers: Joan Hebden, MS, RN, CIC, FAPIC, FSHEA, and Deb Patterson Burdsall, PhD, RN-BC, CIC, LTC-CIP, FAPIC

Long-term care (LTC) staff provide high-contact resident care and therefore are frequently exposed to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). During this 60-minute webinar, Joan Hebden, MS, RN, CIC, FAPIC, FSHEA, president of IPC Consulting Group, and Deb Patterson Burdsall, PhD, RN-BC, CIC, LTC-CIP, FAPIC, a leading infection preventionist with the Hektoen Institute of Medicine and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Grantee, will discuss Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBPs), which are an infection control intervention implemented to reduce the transmission of MDROs, specifically for LTC residents with wounds requiring dressings or indwelling medical devices (i.e. residents at increased risk of MDRO acquisition) and/or residents with an epidemiologically important MDRO.

The speakers will cover the scientific background for mandated adoption of EBPs, key terms, high-contact care activities that dictate the use of EBPs, how to distinguish EBPs from Standard and Contact Precautions, common challenges when implementing EBPs, and how to determine when EBPs are appropriate using case scenarios.

After participating in this webinar, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the scientific background for mandated adoption of EBPs in LTC facilities
  • Recognize key terms that support EBPs
  • Discern which high-contact care activities dictate the use of EBPs
  • Distinguish EBPs from Standard and Contact Precautions
  • Identify common challenges encountered when implementing EBPs
  • Determine when EBPs are appropriate

This webinar is hosted by AAPACN and presented by APIC.
