It is time to prepare for the FY 2026 ICD-10-CM coding updates, which go into effect on Oct. 1, 2025. HIPAA requires that the facility’s clinical team ensure accurate diagnoses are reflected in the medical record. Additionally, these codes are required on billing claim forms as well as MDSs, which impact payment under the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM). Facility teams may be at risk of noncompliance and loss of payment if the codes affected are not properly updated. During this 90-minute webinar, AAPACN Curriculum Development Specialist, Jennifer LaBay, RN, RAC-MT, RAC-MTA, QCP, CRC, will detail the updates to the ICD-10-CM coding instructions that impact long-term care and reimbursement, as well as recommend actionable steps to be taken by Oct. 1 to ensure facilities update current codes to the new and revised ICD-10-CM codes.
After participating in this session, learners will be able to:
- Summarize the overall changes to the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
- Recognize the new codes including updated multiple sclerosis codes, non-pressure chronic ulcer codes, diabetes type 2 in remission codes and updated guidance on hypertension combined codes, HIV sequencing, BMI, and multiple site coding
- Understand three steps to take on Oct. 1 to ensure each resident’s ICD-10-CM codes are kept up to date
- Identify the changes to the PDPM mapping tool
